Bias Tape Daffodils: A Mothers Day Bouquet

Big news guys.  I've started participating in Iron Craft again.  This is my first week back and I'm pumped.  This week we were challenged to create something using sewing notions.  I made daffodils.  Since my mom lives far away, I gave these to myself :) It is my first Mothers Day after all.

Start by gathering some supplies.  Feel free to experiment a little based on the supplies you already have.  I'm kind of a craft hoarder and always buy those bags of random sewing notions that they sell at Goodwill so I had a stash.  Here is basically what you need:

-For the petals: yellow bias tape.
-For the middle part: orange fabric, lace trim
-For the stem: wire and green fabric or green bias tape
-A hot glue gun

Start by cutting a section of wire that will be your stem.  I used some really thick wire that I found at the hardware store.  This will form the base of your flower.  You will then form the orange part on one end [apparently that part is called the corona].

I formed the orange section two different ways.  The first was using some lace trim I had on hand.  Although it had some orange on it, I colored it in to brighten it up.  Again, you can do this two ways: fabric paint or fabric marker.

The other way to make the center is with fabric.  I cut a square of orange fabric using pinking shears and then folded it in half.

With both of these, roll them around the edge of the wire, hot-gluing as you go.  This will form a nice tube of orange.

To make the petals, cut several small strips of bias tape, about 5" each.  Then fold as shown below.  Hot glue the folded section and the two ends together.

Next glue the petals around your flower.  I liked the way they flopped about; it looked realistic.  If you need a petal to stick up a bit more, just glue the petal a little further up.

Finally, use some green fabric or bias tape to wrap the stem.  Make sure to cover the edges of your petals at the top to keep things looking tidy.

That's it!  You can make a whole bouquet.  I had fun trying out different materials and ways of doing it.  If you make your own, I would love to see what you try out!

IC#46- Handmade Felt Ornaments

Our Iron Craft Challenge this week was to make something for the holidays.  I recently signed up for an ornament swap on Creating the Hive and this seemed like the perfect week to get started on my ornaments.  I need to create 13 ornaments; 12 will go into sets for others and one will go to the organizer.  In return, I will get my own set of 12 unique handmade ornaments.  Cool, huh?

I bought some fun colored felt and played around a bit.  I settled on making felt flowers.  I was first inspired by this project, although mine were a bit more colorful.

I sewed buttons on the front and ribbons on the back.  What do you think?

Felted Fun

While at Schoolhouse Craft this weekend, I had a lot of fun using my down time playing at the Art Camp for Big Kids table.  This group offers classes and retreats aimed at adults.  There were a variety of projects, but I just couldn't resist felting.  I had never done it before, and it was AWESOME.  I made flowers.

I wish I had an action shot because you pretty much just get to stab felt over and over with a needle and get it to all mesh together.  Very fun.  I may have to invest in some felting supplies.

ICC#28-Recycled Bottle Cap Flower Tutorial

This week's Iron Craft Challenge was to create something using materials that would normally be thrown away.  I have been collecting bottle caps for years with the thought that someday they would become a project.  This was the day.  I created a flower out of bottle caps and turned it into a decorative garden stake.  Here is the finished product.

Now, here's a step-by-step tutorial.  First I collected my materials.  I used bottle caps (I used 20 in mine), a tin can lid, a chopstick, and glue (I started with super glue but switched to epoxy b/c some weren't holding).

From there, I started bending my bottle caps into the shape of flower petals.  The basic idea was inspired by a previous Iron Craft project where I had created a felt flower.  I used my pliers and just started bending until I got the shape I wanted.

For me, the easiest way to do it was to grab the rim of the bottle cap and pull it down to flatten it.  Then I would bend in the two sides.  Finally, I would bend down the top.  My first few petals looked like blobs of metal so it takes a little trial-and-error.

As I went, I laid my petals out on the tin can lid to determine how many I would need.  I did two layers of petals, but you can switch it up and do more if you like.

Next I glued on the petals.  I did the entire outside row first and then switched to the second layer.  Like I mentioned above, I tried using super glue but found that some of my petals weren't holding so I switched to epoxy.

Finally, I added one more bottle cap in the center.  Now you have a finished flower!

From there, I attached a chopstick by gluing it onto the can lid in between two of the petals.  This allowed me to turn it into a garden stake.  But there are lots of other possibilities.  You could paint it, add leaves (maybe cut from soda cans?), turn it into a pin, etc.

Wedding Season

After my wedding jewelry project this week, I started to think that there might be lots of couples out there gathering wedding inspiration.  I was doing that very thing last year about this time; my wedding was August of last year so all summer I was busy searching out inspiration.  If only I had pinterest at that time.  sigh...

Anyway, I thought I would share some of the pictures from our wedding to help give inspiration to all of you planning out there.  Our colors were orange and blue and we were not too formal about it all.  Enjoy!

First, the flowers.  I wanted something bright because that's just the kind of girl I am.  Lilies are my favorite flower and the first flowers Eugene ever gave me were orange lilies, so that was the starting point.  Other than that, we told the florist to just make a mix, almost like a fresh picked bouquet.  Our decor was a mix of vintage bottles filled with flowers.

Next is the cake.  I don't have a lot to say about this, but I was really pleased with the results.

Here are some pics of our style.  I chose simple dresses for the bridesmaids.  I won't lie and say they could wear them again (I've been a bridesmaid 7 times-you don't wear them again).  I made the necklaces for my bridesmaids and bought them each a different pair of earrings.  The necklaces had orange and blue glass beads with navy blue ribbon on either end to tie them closed.  Sadly, you can't see the jewelry all that well in this picture and I forgot to take close-ups.

For my hair piece, I got a beautiful feather piece off of etsy.  Loved it!  I debated between flowers and feathers, but feathers won out.  You can mainly see the white feathers in this photo, but there was one little peacock feather stuck in there as well.  I tried to link it to the shop but it looks like the shop is closed :(

For wedding favors, we went with bubble gum.  I spit gum in Eugene's face on the night he asked me out so it seemed appropriate.  We used orange gum and printed up little story cards telling the tale.

Okay.  That's all for now.  I'm feeling lazy so I didn't look up all of the vendors info, but if you are in Seattle and loved something you saw, just ask and I will hook you up.  We were VERY happy with everyone we chose.

All photos by Red Box Pictures.  Amazing.  Hire these guys.  Totally worth the money.

ICC #18- Flower Pin

This week's Iron Craft Challenge was flowers.  I decided to work on a project I've been wanting to try for awhile.  Has anyone else seen pictures of those cute felt flower pins?  I feel like I see them everywhere.  I've been saving this tutorial in pdf form for months now, so it seemed like time to make it happen.

I followed the tutorial pretty closely so I didn't take pictures of the process.  However, I did make a few changes.  Rather than gluing the petals, I sewed them.  That way, I didn't have to wait for the glue to dry and I could just fold them down and stitch them as I went.  Also, I chose not to add the photo pocket on the back since I'm keeping this flower for myself!

Craft Show Goodies

I'm really proud of myself.  While at the craft show, I was able to make more money than I was spending.  I tend to have a doubly-hard time at craft shows.  I want to buy things that are really cute that I actually could use.  But I also am an empathy shopper and want to buy from the person who looks a little discouraged like maybe they aren't having such a great day.

I can be very dangerous at craft shows.

But, I was able to control myself this time and limited myself to a few cute items; one present for myself and one present for each of my nieces.

For myself, I got this cute apron from Drapes of Wrath.  This was a very hard choice but I went with a green one.  Look closely, do you recognize the pattern from some of the jewelry I have been making?  Matching!

Next, for my new little niece Adriana, I decided to get this sweet little bib from Stork and Me.  I was really torn because there were lots of cute things, but I just couldn't resist this elephant print.

Finally, for my 2 and a half year old niece Audrey, I went with these fun hair flowers.  I just know she will look adorable in them.  I got them from my booth neighbor, Mother Carey.

Headband Tutorial

Today we will be making embroidery piece headbands.  Yay!  To get started you need: an embroidery patch that you like, a headband (I found a fabric pack at target for $3), and matching fabric (I used cotton, you're welcome to experiment).

Step One- Using the instruction on the patch, iron the patch onto a piece of fabric.

Step Two-Trim around the patch and cut another small piece of fabric that will fit on the back of the patch.

Step Three- Glue the headband in between the patch and the fabric scrap.  I used tacky glue, which has been holding up alright for normal wear.  I found that binder clips worked really well to hold it while it dried.

Step Four- Admire your work.  Put on headband and admire yourself in mirror.  Wow you are stylish.

Another Exciting Mail Day

I got my first postcard from the iHanna swap!  It traveled to me all the way from Finland.  Check it out:

Read the artists blog here
In addition, I received some jewelry findings that I ordered from Troxies on etsy.  I got some ring bases as well as some fun little flowers.  I'm not sure what I will do with the flowers yet (rings?) but they were too cute to resist.

Birthday Flowers!

I just got some beautiful flowers delivered to my door, courtesy of mom and dad :)  Love you!
