Girl!!! I'm having a little baby girl! I love her so much already and she is getting very active. Since I'm stuck on the couch with my broken ankle, I've been obsessively looking at baby stuff online. I've discovered I'm an even bigger geek than I thought because all I want to do is buy geekie onesies. Here's what I've found:
Today I feel like departing a bit from the crafty road and sharing a few things that I think are cool outside the realm of paint and glue guns. I hope you find something you like!
I first saw Gomez perform live in the spring of 2007. My friend and I were going to see Ben Kweller; he was going to be followed by some band I'd never heard of called Gomez. I was blown away. Great music and just a fun show to see live. My favorite album is still How We Operate, but the others are also good. If you are looking for some songs to sample, try Girlshapedlovedrug or Whippin' Piccadilly.
This book is written by the researcher who did years of sign language studies with chimpanzees. Specifically, it focuses on his work with a very special chimpanzee named Washoe, the first non-human to acquire a human language. This book is very near and dear to my heart because I spent a summer as an intern at the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute where several members of Washoe's adoptive family are still living. I have always been fascinated by chimpanzee behavior and it was a dream come true to spend time near such amazing animals.
This site has been around for awhile, so feel free to roll your eyes and thank me for my "discovery." But on the chance you don't know it, I wanted to share. Pandora caught my eye by calling itself the "music genome project" and that could make any young molecular biology student swoon. Basically, you enter in a band/song that you like and it will play songs that match it. As it plays, you can give each song a thumbs up or thumbs down to further tailor your station. It's pretty much all I listen to on my computer anymore. You can visit my Pandora profile here.
AwesomeTasty Treat: Frozen Pineapple
Buy a can of pineapple chunks. Stick it in the freezer for about an hour. Take it out and pour it in a bowl. It's like a pineapple slushy. The pineapple chunks are icy cold and the juice is just starting to thicken up. So good!
Okay, that last one was pretty random but trust me, you're going to go to Costco to stock up on pineapple after that. I hope you enjoyed my day of random!
I have a confession. I'm a geek. I had no idea till last night. I always knew I was a nerd, but a geek? Me? I think it's because I am married to a computer geek and spend lots of social time with uber-geeks. By comparison, I felt very un-geeky. I admit, I didn't even get why everyone kept saying "It's a trap!" at a Star Wars themed birthday party last year (perhaps being at a Star Wars birthday party should have been a giveaway...?). But after laughing over this pin last night, I realized it's true. I, Jenny Chang, am a geek. To celebrate, here are some fun geek finds and crafts.
Lately my show of choice has been Doctor Who. I started with the newest version and blasted through all five seasons available on Netflix. My favorite episode by far is "Blink." IT'S SO GOOD.
My first love was Star Trek TNG. I watched it growing up. My husband and I recently went through the whole series again and then watched through Star Trek Voyager.
I don't know about you but I read it in Captain Picard's voice. Source
I never really thought of Harry Potter as a geek thing, but after my late night epiphany I'm thinking it fits in. I really can't get enough Harry Potter. I've read each book a couple of times and watch the movies on a regular basis. If you are a HP fan I also recommend playing Lego Harry Potter for Wii and watching the Potter Puppet Pals. Yeah...
I spent 5 hours at my church today helping put up Christmas decorations. It was like being thrown into the deep end of holiday spirit. I'm ready though. Christmas CD is in the car, space is cleared for the tree, shopping lists are being made. It's time.
Every year around this time, my mom starts asking me for a Christmas list. She likes to get her shopping done early and get special presents for everyone. This year, I decided to create a "handmade wish list" with some things I like on etsy.
I usually try to make gifts for all my family and friends, so I thought I would like to receive unique, handmade gifts as well. What kind of gifts do you like to give and receive?
I have an orange kitty that I adopted five years ago from a shelter in Kansas City. At the time, I was going to look at another kitty that was advertised. I entered the "Kitty Weight Watchers" room which was reserved for the chubby kitties on diet food. It was then that I laid eyes on him. A big ball of orange fluff that climbed right into my lap. There was just something about him. He was mine.
His name was Coors, like the beer. I tried calling him that for a day because he was six-years-old and I thought he might be used to the name. But I just couldn't do it and renamed him Milo after Milo and Otis. Since then, he has been my annoying, loving, licking, kitty companion. I'm so glad I could give him a home since so many older kitties don't get adopted. In honor of my little buddy, here are some cute orange tabby finds.
When you grow up in Kansas City, one question you hear a lot is, "Is that in Kansas or Missouri?" Well, it's in both. It's a city too awesome to be held in one state. I think this print captures it perfectly.
Yesterday I went on a hike to Lake Serene. It was stunning and tiring. We are getting ready for a big hike up Mt. St. Helens next week. So, today's theme is hiking!!! I searched hiking on etsy and found some cute things.
This past weekend, my hubby and I traveled to Orcas Island to celebrate our anniversary. While there, we enjoyed strolling around town and checking out the local shopping. There were lots of great local artists selling their work and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. My favorite shop? Two Drews. I thought this shop was beautiful as soon as I saw the outside.
Inside, they sold clothes, jewelry, and other fun accessories. We had to go back a second time just because I couldn't decide what to buy. Finally, I chose this sweet little necklace. There were several styles similar to this featuring different items, but the umbrellas just called to me.
When I saw a recent blog post by Alisa Burke, I was blown away. She created these onesies using puff paint. When I think of puff paint, I remember those ugly t-shirts we made as kids. With the glitter paint and maybe some fake jewels glued on. These onesies are not like that.
You can see one image below but click here for the full post. You won't be sorry.
I was looking at my favorite items on etsy and realized there was a tab for "suggested shops." How cool is that? I found this necklace while looking there. Adorable!
A few more of my recent handmade favorites. And in answer to a recent question, no I have not bought any of these favorites I've been showing off recently but yes, I really want to.
WAIT! HOLD THE PRESSES! I DID JUST BUY SOMETHING! I fell in love with this shirt and when she started selling them I jumped on the chance. I can't wait till it gets here.
