IC#8- Recycled Hummingbird Feeder

We were challenged this week to create something using recycled materials.  I had been wanting to put a hummingbird feeder out on my porch so I decided to try and make one.

I started with a small plastic container that held hair gel.  In addition, I used a tall glass bottle and a coke can.  I washed everything and removed what labels I could.

Next, I drilled a hole in the middle of each of the two lids.  This will allow your nectar solution to run between the two containers.

In addition, I drilled several holes around the edge of the hair container.  This will be where the hummingbirds can access the nectar.

Next, I glued the two lids together, making sure the two holes lined up.  I used E6000 to glue them together.

Next, I added a wire cage to the glass bottle which would allow me to hang it up.

Finally, I made some red flowers to decorate it with.  I punched out some hearts from the coke can and then started gluing them on the bottle to form flowers.

As of writing this, I'm still waiting for the glue to completely set so I haven't put it up yet.  I'll keep you posted on whether it functions and attracts hummingbirds.

  4. I hope it attracts the birds. I'm thinking you could do something similar to hold tea lights or small candles. I might have to try that.
